While Afriplex has developed various extracts from the root of Pelargonium sidoides, a botanical well established in the bronchial health applications, the company has once again illustrated that they are ahead of the pack by designing an extract specifically for the food supplement sector. The Afriplex Pelagon range was developed with specialized applications in mind while being mindful of Europe’s current changing legislative environment.
Pelargonium sidoides is a South African indigenous plant that has been used for centuries by the Zulu as a traditional remedy for the treatment of the upper respiratory tract ailments such as coughs, fever, bronchitis, pneumonia and tuberculosis. The main ingredients are coumarines, scopeletin, umckalin and gallic acid derivatives. Various well-established international brands of cough medicine currently uses the Afriplex pelargonium extracts and API’s in pharmaceutical applications.
The Pelagon powder extract range is standardized on specific unique flavonoids present in the plant and processed using specialised extraction techniques to ensure the integrity of the final product. In contrast to Afriplex’s pharmaceutical pelargonium products, the Pelagon range will specifically focus on food supplement applications.
Functionality of the AFRIPLEX PELAGON Range includes:
• The gallic acid derivatives and other phenolic compounds in the roots have powerful antibacterial and antiviral qualities and these compounds together with the tannins and coumarines provide a rationale for the proven immunomodulatory activity. It is therefore ideal for the treatment of various acute and chronic infections such a bronchitis, sinusitis, pneumonia, tonsillitis, rhinopharingites and ear, nose and throat infections.
• Improve typical symptoms associated with colds and flu.
• It is safe for the treatment of children and infants.
• The AFRIPLEX PELAGON RANGE offers opportunities as functional ingredient in food and beverage applications.
The root material is propagated at Afriplex’s agricultural facility, thereby ensuring full traceability and control on raw material quality; thereby living out our dictum of a product developed “from source to shelf”.
